Backup Your Backups

Lin tapped on the keyboard. She didn’t expect the melted computer to boot, but she felt obligated to try.

As she returned to the remains of her desk, Will walked in. “It’s all gone. The safe with our backups is just gone.” He shook his head. “They would’ve needed a crane for that.”

“There was one here yesterday, lifting the roof off this charred heap. Not standard, but no one questioned it.”

“I still don’t know how they got Google to close our accounts.” Will scrubbed his hands across his face, leaving smears of damp charcoal.

“We were gonna destroy the for-profit medical industry. Did you think nothing would happen? You signed a waiver.”

“I thought it was a joke!” Will threw up his hands. “What’re we going to do now? All our work is gone.”

Lin laughed, the sound reverberating as Will’s face changed from annoyed to angry. Eventually, Lin held up a hand and fought to control herself.

“Do you-” Lin paused to suppress a giggle. “Do you really think the paranoid woman who got every maximum insurance policy wouldn’t be prepared for corporate sabotage?”

Lin pushed her desk away and started ripping up floorboards. Eventually, a large metal box set in the concrete foundation emerged. After some pawing at the dials, levers, and switches, Lin swung the door open and revealed a set of hard drives in sealed bags.

“This isn’t even my last backup.” Lin pulled out the drives. “Plus, since the safe has tracer in it, we’ll know who and where they are the instant they crack it.”

Will sat down in Lin’s chair and stared at the drives as Lin shut the sage. “So you’ve got a backup to the backup to the backup?”

Lin chuckled again. “And that’s just the start of it.”
