Summer Has Arrived

After a couple weeks of relatively stable weather, we’re back to temperature jumps, storms, and the occasional severe storm warning. Thankfully, there wasn’t much to write home about during the two week period where everything started going to shit, went to shit, and started slowly recovering, but now, as I labor to get back into the swing of things at work and in my video gaming life, I am finding myself hampered by a day of relative uselessness that is the result of the shifting pressure. My joints, already worn from the work I’ve been doing the last few weeks and not nearly recovered enough thanks to my sleep troubles, are causing me pretty severe pain as the temperture drops fifteen degrees, a storm rages overhead, and the power blinks out briefly. It was bad enough around noon that I had a difficult time walking and moving around without groaning in pain, and I’ve walked off a broken ankle before. I’m no stranger to pushing through the pain. It’s just gotten really bad today.

I’m hoping we don’t get more pressure fronts like this for a while. Work is going to continue to demand physical exertion from me and my body is going to continue to be slow to recover from it as I struggle to get enough sleep most evenings. At least my AC is working now, so my apartment is the right temperature no matter what is going on outside (well, mostly no matter what), so I can have a nice, cool environment to eventually try to sleep in. I just wish I was succeeding more. None of the storms are ever the kind where there’s a nice, soothing rain with the sounds of distant thunder mixed in to help me sleep. They’re all the sort that make me realize that the bit of reflected daylight I can sometimes see from my office has gone entirely dark just in time to not be frightened by a boom of thunder that makes everyone just a little worried about the structural integrity of the building.

At least my ankle that I hurt a couple weeks back has mostly recovered. Doing work that involves standing in one spot isn’t the greatest for a hurt ankle, but it’s hardly the worst, especially when I’ve got an anti-fatigue mat I can drag around to where I need to stand. I mean, it’s absolutely miserably today, thanks to the weather, but I can imagine how much worse it would feel if I was still recovering from that twist. It’s way better than my shoulders and hands, which have suffered the brunt of my efforts at work these last two weeks and have left my hands feeling swollen and stiff at the best of times. Today, it is difficult to type with my usual dexterity and even my often-corrected typing inaccuracies are worse, though maybe not entirely from the weather and the condition of my hands. I’m also quite tired.

We’re slowly entering into the heat of the summer. Temperatures are rising and while we still have the occasional dip into the forties or fifties overnight, it is not uncommon to see numbers in the eighties for at least a few hours every day. The humidity of summer has also settled in and while I’ve still be off my daily walks to let my ankle continue recovering, I am really not looking forward to forcing myself to go out in the muggy, disgusting heat that is so common where I live. Sure, the marshes and bogs may have been filled in, but there’s still enough natural moisture traps for the area to stay incredibly wet so long as we get at least a little rain every week. And then it just fills the area around my place of employment with local humidity that is just awful to wade through without a powerful breeze or some heavy cloud cover. Humidity and direct sunlight are a recipe for disaster. Especially considering that I no longer have the waterbottle I used to take with me on these walks (I dropped it one night while taking it to my car to bring home and clean, and it just broke instantly, despite being plastic). So hopefully we get a few days of lower temperatures soon so I can get back into my walking groove before I have to do that AND put up with horrible summer weather…
